Murder on the rocks by karen macinerney5/10/2023 ![]() I settled myself into a white-painted wooden rocker and took a sip of strong, sweet coffee. As hard as it was to drag myself out of a soft, warm bed while it was still dark outside, I loved mornings on Cranberry Island. ![]() ![]() Just enough time for a relaxed thirty minutes on the kitchen porch.Įquipped with a mug of steaming French-roast coffee, I grabbed my blue windbreaker from its hook next to the door and headed out into the gray Maine morning. My eyes focused on the clock above the sink: 6:30. The coffeepot had barely finished gurgling when I sprinkled the pan of dimpled batter with brown-sugar topping and eased it into the oven. The recipe was one of my favorites: not only did my guests rave over the butter-and-brown-sugar-drenched cake, but its simplicity was a drowsy cook's dream. ![]() I grabbed the sugar and flour canisters from the pantry and dug a bag of blueberries out of the freezer for Wicked Blueberry Coffee Cake. Fog, it looked like–the swirling mist had swallowed even the Cranberry Rock lighthouse, just a quarter of a mile away. ![]() Ten minutes later I was in the kitchen, inhaling the aroma of dark-roasted coffee as I tapped it into the coffeemaker and gazing out the window at the gray-blue morning. As much as I enjoyed innkeeping, I would never get used to climbing out of bed while everyone else was still sleeping. The alarm rang at 6 AM, jolting me out from under my down comforter and into a pair of slippers. ![]()

Reviews the candy house5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The music biz may be crass, showy, and greedy, but it basically wants people to have a good time. The difference between the two industries partly accounts for the different vibes of these sibling novels. Instead of zeroing in on the music business as its hub, The Candy House features the technology industry that now saturates every fiber of our lives. However, just as the world itself has become darker and more contentious since 2010, the world of The Candy House is more sober than Goon Squad’s rock and roll heart. Egan’s prose is as lithe and knowing as ever, tender toward human folly, but highly aware of how flawed we all are. Like Goon Squad, The Candy House is a collage of interconnected characters and stories told in diverse forms that follow their own wayward paths. The music industry pros Bennie Salazar and Lou wander through as well, along with various of their respective children from several marriages. You’ll cross paths with Sasha’s husband, Drew her son, Lincoln, who falls somewhere on the autism spectrum and her art history professor uncle, Ted. You’ll see kleptomaniac Sasha again, who has now transformed her criminality into art. The two books are connected loosely, like wildflowers sown in the same field. Fans of Jennifer Egan’s breakout hit and Pulitzer Prize-winning 2010 novel A Visit from the Goon Squad will be thrilled to know that its “sibling novel,” The Candy House, is here at last. ![]()

The Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() The story is told in first person from Bob Howard’s point of view so inevitably he’s the best developed character.Ĭharles Stross had already written a story of that kind titled “A Colder War” and someone mistakenly consider it as linked to the Bob Howard stories. The novel “The Atrocity Archive” is very short by today’s standards – less than 250 pages – and essentially introduces this occult secret agent’s particular fictional world. “The Atrocity Archives” contains the first Bob Howard stories written by Charles Stross. ![]() Bob Howard begins to investigate a concrete cow and eventually discovers that behind it there’s a conspiracy that will endanger the Laundry itself. In “The Concrete Jungle” the power of the Gorgons was implemented in surveillance cameras. The first task is tedious and at the end Howard is soaking wet but the next assignment, which is supposed to be routine, becomes a deadly battle fought in two universes with a creature conjured by the Nazis decades earlier. “The Atrocity Archive” introduces Bob Howard in his first active-duty assignments on behalf of the Laundry, a secret British government agency with a unique specialization, the occult. In 2005 it received the Hugo Award as the Best Novella of the year. ![]() The novella “The Concrete Jungle” was published for the first time in 2004. The novel “The Atrocity Archive” has been published for the first time in the magazine “Spectrum SF” between November 2001 and November 2002. “The Atrocity Archives” contains two stories by Charles Stross. ![]()

Snyder timothy on tyranny5/10/2023 ![]() History can familiarise, and it can warn. European history shows us that societies can break, democracies can fall, ethics can collapse, and ordinary people can find themselves in unimaginable circumstances. ![]() These were movements in which a leader or a party claimed to give voice to the people, promised to protect them from global existential threats, and rejected reason in favour of myth. In the twentieth century, European democracies collapsed into fascism, Nazism and communism. History does not repeat, but it does instruct. 'These 128 pages are a brief primer in every important thing we might have learned from the history of the last century, and all that we appear to have forgotten' Observer ' A sort of survival book, a sort of symptom-diagnosis manual in terms of losing your democracy and what tyranny and authoritarianism look like up close' Rachel Maddow ![]()

![]() Norman Cantor, the premier historian of the Middle Ages, draws together the most recent scientific discoveries and groundbreaking historical research to pierce the mist and tell the story of the Black Death afresh, as a gripping, intimate narrative. The details of the Plague etched in the minds of terrified schoolchildren - the hideous black welts, the high fever, and the final, awful end by respiratory failure - are more or less accurate. ![]() Much of what we know about the greatest medical disaster ever, the Black Plague of the fourteenth century, is wrong. The grasshopper by bernard suits5/9/2023 ![]() Perhaps most importantly, for the first time in print, Suits reveals his underlying worldview: that humanity is forever fated to endure a cyclical existence of privation, brought on by material scarcity, and boredom, resulting from material plenitude. In Return of the Grasshopper, Suits puts his theoretical cards on the table, exploring the in-depth implications of his definition of utopia, assessing the merits of a gamified philosophy, and explaining how games can provide an existential balm against the fear of death. ![]() ![]() In this sequel to Bernard Suits’ timeless classic philosophical work The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia, published in its full and unabridged form for the first time, Suits continues to explore some of our most fundamental philosophical questions, including the value of sport and games, and their relationship to the good life. ![]()

To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf5/9/2023 ![]() ![]() At a young age, Woolf founded Hyde Park Gate News, a family newspaper. Her mother, Julia Jackson Stephen, was a well-connected, kind-hearted woman who modeled for pre-Raphaelite painters and was renowned for her beauty. Leslie Stephen, her father, was a well-known biographer and editor. Virginia Woolf (born Adeline Virginia Stephen) was born on January 25, 1882, in London, England, into a family of artists. ![]() Genre: Modernism/Stream-of-consciousness.This is an attempt to represent the multiple, overlapping, differently focused, and expressed layers of consciousness that James Joyce foresaw when he decided to center all of the action in his novel ‘Ulysses’ (1922) on a single day. The action in each of the two longer sections, “The Window” and “The Lighthouse,” unfolds over a single day. ‘To the Lighthouse’ is a very meticulous body of work. Similar to ‘To the Lighthouse,’ the focus of consciousness in them swings from one character to the next, from their current impressions of the outside world to their inner lives, associations, and memories. Dalloway’ (1925) had previously put to the test what readers thought fiction to be like. ![]() In her two earlier books, ‘Jacob’s Room’ (1922) and ‘Mrs. Virginia Woolf published her fifth book, ‘To the Lighthouse,’ in 1927. ![]() |
